Manchester United have started off their season a bit shakily for their own liking. But what is most surprising is that they have been unable to convert all three penalties that were awarded to them in the season. Robin Van Persie missed the first once against Southampton but then went on to score a hattrick to make up for it. It was Hernandez who missed the second one and Nani the third one.
With Wayne Rooney sidelined after a thigh injury, United were missing their first choice penalty taker. And all three who stepped up missed their chances. Robin Van Persie’s penalty was heavily criticized for it came at a time when United were trailing by one goal. But he more than made up for it as he went on to score a hattrick to win the game for Manchester United in the dying minutes of the game. Hernandez missed the penalty too against Wigan but then went on to score and win the game for the team. In Rooney’s absence it was expected that Robin Van Persie would be the first choice for taking the spot kick and hence it came as a bit if a shocker when Nani lined up to take it against Galatasaray. Once again the penalty was awarded at a very critical time when Manchester United, though leading by a goal, were looking extremely vulnerable. A successful penalty would ease the pressure on United but it was not to be as Nani squandered away an easy chance. Sir Alex Ferguson himself said that he was surprised to see Nani take the penalty and was expecting Robin Van Persie to step up but that was not to be. At the same time Sir Alex Ferguson took full responsibility of the missed chances and said that it was not earlier clear as to who would be the official penalty taker in Rooney’s absence.
Meanwhile Sir Alex Ferguson is not very satisfied with the defense and to add to his woes, his captain and central defender Vidic has been sidelined due to an injury. He admitted that Manchester Untied looked extremely vulnerable against Galatasaray and also against the teams in the EPL. He is adamant that he does not want to repeat their last year’s performance at Champions League which saw them exiting in the very first round itself. Sir Alex Ferguson knows that a team like Manchester United is expected to play a certain standard of football and he is more than eager to get back to his dominant winning ways.
